SOUTH DAKOTA INDIAN EDUCATION ACT
SDCL 13-1-47: Office of Indian Education established which shall support initiatives in order that South Dakota’s students and public school instruction staff become aware of and gain an appreciation of South Dakota’s unique American Indian culture. The Secretary shall appoint an Indian Education Advisory Council.
SDCL 13-1-48: Certain teachers required to take South Dakota Indian Studies (3 credits), which shall include components specific to: Language and cultural awareness; history; educational theory and background of the traditional tribal education; implementation and strategies of Indian learning styles, curriculum development and authentic assessment.
SDCL 13-1-49: DOE in cooperation with the IEAC shall develop course content for curriculum and coursework in South Dakota American Indian history and culture.
SDCL 13-1-50: South Dakota American Indian language revitalization program established.
SD 13-1-51: The Board of Education may promulgate rules pursuant to chapter 1-26 to provide for curriculum and coursework in South Dakota American Indian history and culture.
